The cellulosic fibrous wastes from oil palm production are digestible only poorly and as such are not suitable for used as feeds. In particular, EFBs are hard fibrous substances with sharp ends, so even ruminants are incapable of eating them in the untreated form. An object, therefore, of the invention is to enhance the digestibility of the cellulosic fibrous wastes of oil palm such as EFB and PPF and use them as feeds with a view to preventing the environmental pollution due to their disposal such as by incineration and to utilising them effectively. To attain this object, EFB, PPF and other cellulosic fibrous wastes of oil palm are shredded and admixed with inorganic nutrient sources (e.g. ammonium sulfate) or rice bran. The mixture is the adjusted to suitable moisture content for use as a culture medium. The medium is packed into a container such as a plastic bag, sterilised by exposure to radiations (e.g. ɣ-rays and electron beams) and /or high pressure steam, inoculate with useful microorganisms [e.g. a mushroom fungus such as Lentinus sajor caju (Fr. : Fr.) Fr (Pleurotus sajor caju), which edible and commonly known as “oyster mushroom” in Malaysia and other countries of South East Asia and subjected to fermentation such as that the wastes are transformed to a highly digestible feed.
